Healthy Habits
Life is no big deal (NBD) so if you’re on the bridge (OTB) - take a step back and try these healthy habits before you totally lose it (TLI)!
1. Be Active. This means simply BE ACTIVE. This does not require you to wear some ridiculous get up or buy any equipment or do any counting of repetitious movements… Just get up, get out there and start moving deliberately.
2. Stretch / Relax. Some people call it meditation. Some people also call walking in the woods ‘hiking’, or riding a bike ‘cycling’. I don’t care what you call it; don’t be intimidated by pretense. Spend 5 or 10 minutes every single day stretching your muscles and relaxing and breathing deliberately. Again — this is not some ritual where you need to put on a special outfit and stand on your special stretching mat and count the seconds between breathes… Just be easy for a few and feel whats going on under your skin and stretch and loosen your muscles. Slow down to think and appreciate how lucky you truly are.
3. Sleep. I never understood people who brag about how little they sleep or how little sleep they need (under the false impression that they’re somehow more efficient). Sleep deprivation is a form of psychological torture. All things need replenishment and rest. Not sleeping is a guarantee that you will perform below par. So if you’re effective without sleep - imagine how much more clearly your thinking will be and how much more efficient you could be WITH it. If you don’t sleep well, make it a priority to figure it out because you’re wilting away.
4. Drink water and eat fruit when you wake; Don’t eat before bed. There are three distinct digestive cycles which are part of the circadian rhythm of the body. These cycles cannot be changed and if they are not followed properly with correct eating patterns, poor health or other metabolic issues will eventually occur. The 3 digestive cycles are Appropriation cycle (eating during the day - approx. Noon - 8pm), Assimilation cycle (absorption of nutrients while we sleep - approx. 8pm to 4am), Elimination cycle (waste excretion upon waking - approx. 4am - 12 noon). Learn more about it HERE.
5. Don’t Waste Your Time. Don’t Worry About It. It’s No Big Deal. Never waste even one moment worrying or thinking about things that you can’t control… and if you can get something under control, then stop worrying or thinking and start getting it under control! DO, don’t WAIT. Do not be paralyzed by neuroses.
6. Do things YOU LIKE to do. Don’t be a rat racer; pursue happiness and whatever you need will come to you. Perform meaningful work that challenges you and do not settle for less. Have goals and allow yourself the freedom to pursue them — you’ll soon see that balance will adjust itself.
7. Listen without judgment. Have the courage to really listen; to hear and understand what is meant, not only what is said. Any moron can pass judgment and see things through their own eyes. It takes courage, intelligence and effort to truly understand something or someone else. Don’t be a coward - step outside your self and LISTEN.
8. If you smoke cigarettes, quit. It’s 2010. Unless you’re growing your own tobacco and rolling your own cigarettes, that shit is POISON.
9. Be connected. This is more than buy LOCAL FOODS and PRODUCTS and ‘think green’ or some bullshit marketing tactic. Think about it. When you flush the toilet, where does it go? When you turn on the lights, where does it come from? When you turn on the faucet, where does the water come from and where does the drain end? Where do all the things at the stores come from? How many hands have touched each thing and where will it end up when you throw it away? What is the cause and effect of each of our personal decisions? WONDER & THINK. Don’t take any thing for granted.
10. Allow Natural Rhythm. All of these habits begin and end with acknowledging and allowing a natural rhythm to take place. Without getting too new-age, it’s a simple concept: go with the flow, don’t force things or be displeased when life doesn’t match your preconceived notions. Pay attention to your subconscious and know when you’re standing in your own way.
11. Be Curious. Ask HOW and WHY. Don’t live your life on auto-pilot.
12. Loosen up and SHARE yourself. Don’t apologize. Without being self destructive or putting others into danger or discomfort - be reasonable - enjoy yourself, be foolish, have a laugh. Share yourself with other people. Talk about and share things that interest you.
13. Write Your Ideas Down. More than a to-do list - take some time to physically write out an idea or thought or feeling. Throw it away afterward or keep it in a list or a blog - doesn’t matter. Just take some time to develop and own your thoughts.
14. Prioritize. Forget what you’re supposed to do — and do what makes sense. In order to do this successfully, you’ll need to think ahead a little and communicate effectively with people that rely on you and who you rely on. Clearly articulate expectations, don’t assume anything.
15. Be willing to disagree. If you don’t understand or don’t like something —- ask more questions. If you need a little convincing, engage in conversation to get your questions answered. There is a time and a place for clarity and complaining after the fact — because you didn’t speak up sooner — is the worst! DON’T COMPLAIN - do something about it.
16. Outline, don’t plan. It is possible to be prepared AND spontaneous. Be open. No expectations. Be willing to go off the trail but have the map handy if all else fails.
17. Make decisions. Set deadlines. Don’t agonize. Don’t procrastinate. Learn to enjoy the work it takes to get the things you like.
18. Wait 48 hours before buying anything (or making a big decision). I realize this may seem contrary to #17. Be reasonable. Some things do not require deliberation or hesitation, some deserve it. You decide which things to deliberate and which things to apologize for later.
19. READ. This healthy habit is similar to # 7: Listen. Reading (magazines, websites, books, brochures) gives you a perspective outside your own and outside the opinions and voices you typically hear from friends, family, coworkers. There is a whole world out there with interesting ideas… get outside your comfort zone and check them out. If you have kids, READ to them. If you read something interesting, SHARE it with friends.
20. Think positively. You ARE what you think. Your perception is everything. Avoid negative thoughts. Avoid negative people. This is the most important healthy habit of all. Read: Law of Attraction & Law #10: Avoid the unhappy. The chronically unfortunate draw misfortune on themselves. You may think you are helping the drowning man but you are only precipitating your own disaster.
